Вживання редуплікації в мовах світу

У лінгвістиці редуплікація — це морфологічний процес, під час якого корінь або основа слова, його частина або все слово повторюється точно або з невеликими змінами.

Класичне спостереження щодо семантики редуплікації належить Едварду Сепіру: «Зазвичай використовується з очевидною символікою для позначення таких понять, як розподіл, множинність, повторення, звична діяльність, збільшення розміру, додаткова інтенсивність, тривалість»[1]. Редуплікація використовується в словозміні для передачі граматичної функції, такої як множинність або інтенсифікація, а також у лексичній деривації для створення нових слів. Вона часто використовується, коли мовець адаптує більш виразний або образний тон, ніж у звичайній мові, і також часто, але не виключно, має іконічне значення. Редуплікація зустрічається в широкому діапазоні мов і мовних груп, хоча її рівень лінгвістичної продуктивності варіюється. Приклади можна знайти в таких давніх мовах, як шумерська, де воно використовувалося для утворення деяких термінів, що позначають колір, наприклад babbar «білий», kukku «чорний»[2].

Редуплікація — це стандартний термін для позначення цього явища в лінгвістичній літературі. Інші терміни, що іноді використовуються, включають клонування, подвоєння, дублювання, повторення та тавтонімія (коли воно використовується в біологічних таксономіях, таких як Bison bison).
